Beyond Textbooks: A Trekking Trip by MCKV students
Published on: 01 Jun 2023
As the saying goes, ‘the mountains are calling and we must go’. Unable to deny this irresistible call, on 14 May 2023, our trek group comprising four teachers, two trained instructors, four guides and forty students from classes 9 to 12, set out on a journey of a lifetime.
The trek began from Dhotrey. Though the weather played spoil-sport, it couldn’t dampen the spirits of our young trekkers. The team proceeded to Tumling via Tonglu. This was the longest distance covered- about 18 kms on unpaved roads. The dense green cover on both sides and the peaceful silence added to the rich experience. Watching the beautiful sunrise, amidst the clouds, was definitely a high point of the trek. Next day the group trekked to Kalipokhri via Gairibas, and finally the last day to Sandakphu. Every passing milestone, was an additional packet of energy. The view of the Sleeping Buddha, surrounded by the clouds was truly inexplicable.
Trekking is truly a way of life. Some times it’s an ascent, some times it’s a descent. Sometimes one feels over excited, sometimes one feels low, however, the key to completing a trek successfully, just like life, is to be consistent and keep moving forward, despite all odds.
Once back in Siliguri, after having completed the trek, the trek-group explored the local market and gathered souvenirs to cherish for a life-time. The Jungle Safari was just the perfect adventure needed to round-off the trip. The life-long memories created in the trip is something that all the participants will often revisit and fondly remember forever.
